About CIYOTA (COBURWAS International Youth Organization to Transform Africa)
COBURWAS International Youth Organization to Transform Africa (CIYOTA) is a volunteer-based, non-profit organization that was established by refugee youth in December 2005 in Kyangwali refugee settlement, Uganda. The organization was founded by individuals from Congo (DRC), Burundi, Uganda, Rwanda, and Sudan who arrived at Kyangwali alongside other refugees escaping regional conflicts. Initially operating as an inclusive youth-led club focused on supporting vulnerable populations, it has evolved into a recognized model for educational excellence serving both refugee communities and local Ugandan populations. CIYOTA recognizes the power of education as a pathway out of poverty, as well as a means to heal conflict, create social cohesion, and spur economic growth. The organization emphasizes educational approaches that simultaneously engage families and communities, with adults maintaining direct contact with children throughout all initiatives.
