About Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village
Founded in 2005 after Anne Heyman learned that Rwanda had 1.2 million orphans following the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village (ASYV) was inspired by post-Holocaust Israel's residential orphan care model. ASYV empowers vulnerable and orphaned Rwandan youth to build lives of dignity through healing, education, and love. Since opening its gates to 128 students in 2008, ASYV has graduated 1,242 alumni; the current student population of 503 spans grades 9–12. Academic tracks include four science combinations (Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science; Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics; Mathematics, Economics and Geography) and one humanities combination (History, Geography, and Literature), plus entrepreneurship, General Studies, English, and Kinyarwanda. The model rests on four pillars: formal education, Parental Wholeness (stable family units), Health & Wellness (medical care, psycho-social support, nutrition), and LEAP — Life Enrichment Applied Programs offering hands-on science, arts, music, dance, culinary arts, salon, and community service. Alumni have studied in the US, UK, Canada, China, Germany, Italy, Ghana, and Rwanda's top universities — all on fully-funded scholarships or loan programs.
