About African Leadership Academy
African Leadership Academy (ALA) seeks to enable lasting peace and prosperity in Africa by developing and connecting the continent's future leaders — the future Nelson Mandela, the next Wangari Maathai, the African Bill Gates. The two-year A-level high school program draws from a socioeconomically diverse population of students from across the continent with strong leadership records and potential, with a core curriculum of Entrepreneurial Leadership, African Studies, and a range of traditional subjects. In partnership with The MasterCard Foundation, ALA created the Akwanya program — a pathway to university for economically disadvantaged sub-Saharan African students. The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at ALA selects students from HALI partner organizations and places them on full scholarships at partner universities around the world, providing holistic support and education that empowers Scholars to lead change in their communities.
