About Abaarso School
Abaarso School nurtures the academic, intellectual, and character development of promising Somali students so they can effectively and ethically advance their society. Over 100 alumni have been accepted with full-need funding to top universities worldwide — including most of the US's top liberal arts colleges and global institutions such as ALU (Rwanda), APU Ritsumeikan (Japan), Ashoka University (India), Carnegie Mellon, Georgetown, and Northwestern in Qatar, Jacobs University (Germany), USIU (Kenya), and University of Stirling (Scotland). Some students transfer to boarding schools including African Leadership Academy, US secondary schools, and United World Colleges. Volunteer teachers from Africa, Europe, and North America keep the school running on a budget under $500,000/year, with tuition less than 1/10 of comparable international schools. The school is need-blind — nearly half of students receive financial aid, including children from the local Abaarso village and the Hargeisa Orphanage. Alumni abroad have earned a combined 3.2 GPA at US universities, with over 90% graduating within four years. The Abaarso Network includes the secondary school, three Kaabe primary schools, and Barwaaqo — Somaliland's first residential women's university. Founded in 2009 by Jonathan Starr; current Head of School is Chris Green.
