About

African Science Academy, (ASA) is a boarding school serving young African women with outstanding potential. The school’s mission is to provide access to high quality pre-degree education leading to internationally recognized A-Level qualifications, regardless of the students’ financial background. The two year A-level course is completed in 10 months from August to June. The core curriculum comprises of maths and physics, and all lessons are conducted in English.

ASA is located in Tema, Ghana and was opened in August 2016 by the NGO African Gifted Foundation Ghana. Its pioneering cohort graduated in June 2017. Diversity as a core value for ASA, students attend from across Africa, So far ASA students have come from Burundi, Cameroon, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South – Africa,Tanzania, Togo, Uganda and Zimbabwe. ASA students are highly motivated in STEM and academically talented, during their time at ASA they are exposed to international approaches to learning and experience living in a multinational community. They are provided with many opportunities to share their cultures and improve their collaboration with people different to themselves.

Students are admitted after their senior secondary education in preparation for courses in male dominated areas of STEM, examples include engineering, computer science and physics, with the aim of completing these courses at the best universities in Africa and around the world. Academically gifted students with a passion for math and science, are selected from a wide variety of backgrounds. Scholarships and bursaries are made available to students on a means-tested basis so far 100% of students have received full scholarships. The vision is for these gifted scientist to collaborate and use their acquired STEM education to impact Africa and the world.
